Write what you know—that’s what we’ve been told again and again. But what do we know, exactly? And how do we write it so that someone else can understand where we’re coming from?

In this interactive 2-SESSION course—which can be useful to both new and experienced writers—you'll:

  • Hear about how learning to embrace her background and write about setting led one writer to a bestselling book deal.

  • Learn why it’s as important to find the places in your fiction as it is to find its characters.

  • Discover your own heart’s fields and practice writing about them in a series of short exercises.

  • Receive feedback from your instructor and peers.

  • Pick the brains of a seasoned novelist and short story writer, and talk about your writing in a safe, encouraging space.

Cynthia Hand is the New York Times bestselling author of over a dozen novels, including the Unearthly trilogy, The Last Time We Say Goodbye, The Afterlife of Holly Chase, The How & The Why, and With You All The Way. She also writes the Jane books with fellow authors Jodi Meadows and Brodi Ashton, including My Lady Jane, which was recently released as a television series on AmazonPrime. Before turning to young adult and genre fiction, she studied literary fiction and earned both an M.F.A. and a Ph.D. in fiction writing. She has been teaching fiction, poetry, and screenwriting at the university level from more than twenty years, most recently at Boise State University. She currently resides in Idaho with her husband and daughter, two cats, one crazy dog, and a mountain of books.
