Co-Working Program

Providing writers a space in which to write, a way to commit more deeply to their writing practice, and a path to connect to the local literary world.

From our Co-Workers:

“The Co-Working Program at the Flatiron Writer's Room was one of the bright spots of the pandemic! While my husband took over the house with Zoom work meetings, I had a beautiful, safe, and quiet place to get some writing done. Even though I lost some of my income during the pandemic, their affordable monthly rates made the cost very workable. Thanks to the coworking space at FWR I finished my first book draft! I highly recommend their program for any writer in need of a quiet place to do their work."

“The Flatiron Writers Room has created a wonderful place with The Co-Working Program. It’s what I’ve been wanting to find, an easy writer’s retreat so close to home.”

“I figured out I could spend about $10 a pop at a coffee shop, or spend less money on a quiet Co-Working spot. Your place won, hands down!”

“Disturbance-free, very comfortable, lots of nice amenities that any writer would appreciate.”

THE CHRIS MANHEIM CO-WORKING SCHOLARSHIP

Thanks to a generous donation, we are pleased to announce the creation of the CHRIS MANHEIM** Co-Working Scholarship, which will give the recipient 24/7 access (subject to reservation availability) to our quiet writing space in West Asheville.

“I think we understand—as writers, creators—the power and importance of place, both within our creative work and also in terms of our own physicality—where we work. Receiving the Frances Marion Co-Working Scholarship meant the world to me—or at least a very large portion of my sanity. FWR gave me a place to write, to exist, provided me some sense of security, and a chance to find my footing—not just as a writer but as a human, trying to exist in the world.” — Sam Whicker, 3rd quarter 2021 Scholarship Recipient

This scholarship carries all the benefits of a regular Co-Worker, including 10% off any FWR-sponsored class for which the recipient registers during the term of the scholarship.

This monthly scholarship, awarded quarterly, is renewable for up to the full 3 months of the quarter if you are making good use of the space (We define “making good use of the space” as writing in the space a minimum average of once per week during each month, and abiding by all FWR Co-Working policies). We reserve the right to transfer the scholarship to another applicant if we find you are not making good use of the space.

Before applying for the scholarship, please read our CO-WORKING CONTRACT and CO-WORKING MANUAL to make sure our writer Co-Working program is a good fit for you.

**ABOUT THIS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is named after CHRIS MANHEIM. Christopher Camille Walsh Manheim was a talented and prolific television and feature film writer, a generous donor to the FWR, an avid reader who supported all things literary, and who showed up time after time to cheer on local WNC writers launching their work into the world.

Determined to have a career in the theatre, Chris attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in the early 1970s, where she and her future husband Rick met. In 1978, after discovering an interest in writing for television, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a writing career in television. It didn’t take long for her and her writing partner to find work on the TV series Eight Is Enough and Shirley. Chris began her solo career writing for such shows as CBS Children’s Mystery Theatre, ABC Afterschool Specials (nominated for an Emmy Award), The Mississippi, V, Hotel, The District, and Monk.  She was also a writer/story editor on Murder She Wrote, and writer/executive story editor/producer on Xena: Warrior Princess (nominated for a GLAAD Award) for four years. In 2004, Chris and her husband moved to Asheville where Chris continued her writing. She passed away in August of 2025 after a nine-year battle with appendix cancer.

She will be missed by all who knew her, but we hope that even this small gesture to keep her name and profound generosity alive will provide much-needed support for those in search of a space to create and expand their writing practice. Chris touched so many lives through her amazing talent, forgiving kindness, biting sense of humor, and her determined and adventurous spirit.
