WRITING FOR COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS w/ MATT WILSON

Flatiron Writers Room | 5 Covington Street | Asheville, NC 28806

Tue, Jan 14, 2020, 6:30 PM – Tue, Jan 28, 2020, 6:30 PM EST

Comic books and graphic novels are the bases for some of the most popular movies in the world, and can also help writers get their foot in the door in the world of publishing. But they shouldn't be backdoor screenplays or shadow book proposals. They're part of a medium with its own language, fanbase and history. Some stories can only be told through the the comics medium, but that doesn’t just mean superheroes. Stories of any genre can fit if they have a visual element.

For writers without extensive training and talent in drawing, inking, coloring and lettering, telling those stories requires collaboration. It's very different from other writing, where one agonizes in solitude over every word or phrase. And for those self-publishing -- a near-requirement to get started -- it also means learning how to be an editor who corrals collaborators, sets deadlines and figures out how to fund a project. REGISTER HERE.

In this three-session course (Tuesday evenings 6:30-8:30pm on January 14, 21 and 28, 2020), you’ll learn how this medium is unique. We’ll cover the entire process of comic creation and publishing, from generating an idea that really works in the comics medium to making the finished product available on digital platforms. Students will learn how to write a comic script, collaborate with an artist, find their own printer, promote their work at comic conventions, and more.

Class size is limited to 10 students. REGISTER HERE.

Cost: $135 General Admission, $121.50 for current FWR Co-Working membersPartial need-based scholarships are available for this workshop.

He co-wrote Write More Good, a parody of the AP Stylebook, with the creators of the FakeAPStylebook Twitter account, and is the co-host of the weekly War Rocket Ajax podcast about comics and pop culture.

ENNEAGRAM FOR WRITERS w/ SANDRA SMITH

Flatiron Writers Room | 5 Covington Street | Asheville, NC 28806

Sat, February 15, 2020 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST

The Enneagram is a map that indicates the internal workings of our ego structure. It reveals nine unique perspectives and ways humans filter information and react, as well as patterns and internal stories associated with each Enneagram type. The uniqueness of this system lies in how it identifies motivations beneath behaviors. The Enneagram acknowledges how the three centers of intelligence--head, heart and body--impact how we make decisions and problem solve. Working with the Enneagram allows us to see others as they are to themselves rather than through our projections. REGISTER HERE.

In this Enneagram class designed for writers, we’ll explore each of the nine types in depth, naming the strengths, challenges and paths for growth. Writers can use this exploration to create and develop characters, and once writers know their own Enneagram type, they’ll see how their placement of attention, blind spots and inherent gifts influence their writing lives.

Though not required, reading The Essential Enneagram prior to the workshop can offer some insights into the Enneagram system. REGISTER HERE.

This class meets Saturday, February 15, 2020, from 10am-3-m with a 30-minute lunch break. We encourage you to bring a brown bag lunch.

Cost$90 General Admission, $81 for current FWR Co-Working members. Partial need-based scholarships are available for this workshop.

To register by check instead of Eventbrite, mail your check and a valid email address to the Flatiron Writers Room, 5 Covington Street, Asheville, NC 28806. You will be registered when we receive your check, space permitting.

Sandra Smith, MDiv, is a Certified Narrative Enneagram Tradition teacher and an IEA (International Enneagram Association) Accredited Professional. Sandra teaches the Enneagram throughout North America as a tool for personal, professional and spiritual development. Her podcast with an Enneagram colleague, Heart of the Enneagram, explores dimensions of the nine unique personalities as they interview guests, and has had over 200,000 downloads in 80 countries.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: If we have to cancel class due to inclement weather, we will make our best efforts to notify you by email at least 2 hours before the scheduled start time. The make up date for this class will be February 16, 2020, 1pm-5pm.

Flatiron Writers Room | 5 Covington Street | Asheville, NC 28806

Wed, Mar 4, 2020, 6:30 PM – Wed, Apr 8, 2020, 6:30 PM EST

Solo plays have been embraced by producers for years, from historical shows such as The Belle of Amherst, I Am My Own Wife, and Mark Twain Tonight, to collections of monologues like Vagina Monologues, For Colored Girls . . ., and The Laramie Project. More recently, we’ve seen cutting edge works like John Fleck’s Black Top Highway, a collection of characters inspired by classic horror cinema, and Sarah Jones’ Sell/Buy/Date, a futuristic look at individuals affected by the sex industry.

Are you passionate about a historical person or contemporary issue? Do you know unique characters in your circle of family and friends? Create your own set of monologues or one-person play in this six-week workshop. REGISTER HERE.

We will begin with an overview of successful works in this genre, exploring the variety of composition and theme among them. Writers will then begin to develop their own pieces from prompts that explore how to craft dynamic action, language, and structure. Each meeting, writers will present excerpts of the work-in-process and receive feedback. Prior to the workshop, participants will receive a brief “play list” of reading or viewing to provide examples during discussion.

This 6-week class meets Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm starting March 4, 2020.

REGISTER HERE. Cost$275 General Admission, $247.50 for current FWR Co-Working members. Partial need-based scholarships are available for this workshop.

FLASH IN A FLASH w/KATEY SCHULTZ

Flatiron Writers Room | 5 Covington Street | Asheville, NC 28806

Sun, March 15, 2020 from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM EDT

Back by popular demand, this course is not to be missed. Flash is one of the most popular genres being written and published today. Whether you’re already published, mired in NaNoWriMo drafts you’re unsure how to shape, deep into a memoir project, ready to play, or fully devoted to fiction, the skills required in flash fiction and flash nonfiction will improve your ability to handle scene, embed metaphor, and target a character’s yearning or desire with precision.

In this 4-hour course, you will: learn the defining traits of flash form writing, study noteworthy examples, write from prompts, and receive light feedback. Leave the course feeling confident about scene, concision, and that elusive “so what?” factor that can turn anecdotal writing into a universally impactful narrative. You'll also leave with several drafts started and a clear sense for what to do next, on your own. REGISTER HERE.

Class meets Sunday, March 15, 2020 2pm-6pm.

REGISTER HERE. Cost: $85 General Admission$76.50 for current FWR Co-Working membersPartial need-based scholarships are available for this workshop.

This will be a hands-on workshop where you will generate new writing, share your work, and respond to the writing of others. REGISTER HERE.

To guide our discussions and writing, we will read short essays by innovative authors such as Patricia Smith, Bernard Cooper, Kiese Laymon, and Peggy Shumaker, to see how these writers transform broad events into compelling and intimate narratives.
